Trailer Inspections
Per RSMo 301.191, effective August 28, 2019, all homemade trailers, regardless of the length of the trailer, must be inspected by either the Sheriff in your county of residence, or by authorized personnel from the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
According to the Missouri Department of Revenue, a trailer is defined as a unit attached to and towed by a motorized vehicle designed to carry property and/or passengers. A trailer cannot be motorized or self-operable.
Trailers in Missouri must be registered and titled with the exception of hay and cotton trailers and tow dollies.
To alleviate wait time for citizens in need of trailer inspections by ensuring we have a deputy on site, we require appointments for all inspections.
To request an appointment, click HERE.
There is a $25 inspection fee that must be paid at the time of the inspection.
Payment will be accepted by exact cash or money order only. NO PERSONAL CHECKS.
You will be required to bring your trailer to the CCSD office, unless other arrangements are made. A deputy will have you complete Section A of Form 5062 and they will then complete Section C. You will be given a copy of Form 5062 to submit with other required paperwork for titling and registration to the Department of Revenue.

The following are requirements for all trailers to be licensed:
TAILLIGHTS: Each trailer must display (on the rear) two red taillights, two red reflectors, and a white license plate light. The reflectors may be incorporated in the taillights.
SAFETY CHAINS (OR AN EQUIVALENT DEVICE): Are required in addition to the primary coupling device, except for farm equipment, wreckers, fifth-wheel or gooseneck type vehicles, and vehicles being towed that are not required to be licensed.
TRAILER BRAKES: Trailer brakes are required on trailers coupled by a fifth wheel and kingpin, and on trailers hauling hazardous materials with a gross weight exceeding 3,000 pounds.
BREAK-AWAY SWITCH: Every trailer is required to be equipped with brakes. The brakes shall be equipped with brakes of such character as to be applied automatically and promptly upon breakaway from the towing vehicle. Brakes must maintain application on the trailer in such case for 15 minutes.
BRAKE LIGHTS AND DIRECTIONAL SIGNALS: These signals are required if visible signals cannot be given by arm and hand; or when the distance from the center of the top of the steering post to the left outside limit of the body, cab, or load exceeds 24 inches; or when the distance from the center of the top of the steering post to the rear limit of the body or load exceeds 14 feet. This applies to single vehicles or a combination of vehicles.
MAXIMUM LENGTH AND HEIGHT: The maximum trailer length allowed is 45 feet, including the load, or 60 feet for semi-tractor-trailers.
MAXIMUM WIDTH: The trailer width may not exceed 102 inches on interstate highways and designated highways or 96 inches on all other highways. Heights may not exceed 14 feet on interstates and designated highways or 13.5 feet on all other highways.
